Cannon Vixia HFR-100 editing software file formats

by Alex
(North Carolina)

Having the same issues that the gal with the S100 mentioned in February. I have the same problem but I am using the R100. There are too many steps to convert and then be able to edit. Their image mixer software is limited and not too helpful. You had suggested Sony Movie Studio HD Platinum for the PC. I have a PC too and have an old version of camtasia. "Studio 2".

My main issue is the concern of taking the beautiful clear video and getting it up to the web. The file formats are bizzarre extensions. .cpi and .mts I would like to put this into something that I can edit and play with then put up to either Youtube, or Amazon s3. Any suggestions? Do you think the Sony Movie studio HD platinum will do the Job? PS. The reason I got the R100 is that is has an external microphone jack. My main interest is doing training videos so I need good audio. I do screen cam trainings with power point and Camtasia also, but want to move into video and add that into my trainings. I had done many screen cams in camtasia and my recollection is that they are saved in an AVI file before they are rendered. What file format do you recommend to work with to do editing before rendering? Thanks in advance, and I am looking around your site. Amazing information, and I might have the answer to my questions right here. Keep up the good work, I am glad I found this site!

Can you change the videos using Canons software? I would say you can.

Should you use the odd ball extensions? I would say stick to the more common file extensions

Hi Mr. Video,
Thanks for the follow up. I think you overlooked one of my questions.

Next, a quick tech question.- When I input the video from the camera into the computer it comes in as the bizarre formats.- What I am asking is 1. can those videos be edited and tweeked in that format, or do I / should I convert to wmv, or avi before I do the tweeking / editing?

Thanks

Hi Alex

Sony does offer a product "Sony Movie Studio HD" which is an inexpensive product. The Vegas Platinum is a better product with more features. I own version 10 since version 11 was not out when I bought the software.

As far as editing the videos, I always use one of the Sony software programs rather then the Canon software.

Mr Video :-)

Thanks for the quick response. You mention the Sony studio software, and I have been looking at the training videos. Now it seems there is the Vegas studio.- I would get the platinum suite with the sound forge audio, but some of the reviews indicate that version 10 is better than version 11. Is this what you are suggesting or is there just a Sony movie studio not "Vegas"?

I also understand that the mp4 video is real efficient for size and quality. - The SBI site / service looks awesome. I was looking at amazon S-3. You may have changed my mind. :) Thanks

Hi Alex

Yes, Canon seems to offer "free" editing software that is more trouble then its worth. I'd highly recommend upgrading to the Sony Movie Studio HD editing software.

It's great that you had the foresight to buy a camcorder with an external mic jack. That is the only way to ensure good audio quality!

As far as file formats, I'd recommend .FLV Be sure to check out the page on Adding video to your website. It will provide a step by step procedure to create videos that you can upload to YouTube or put on your own site. Don't try to use those oddball file formats.

Also, check out the page on Using Youtube

Good luck
