Camcorder Microphones Video Tutorial

In this Camcorder Microphones video tutorial, we will look at how one the most important features of a camcorder is a microphone jack and how to get great sounding audio on a low-budget.

FACT! You cannot produce professional looking (and sounding) videos without an external microphone, and in this video tutorial we will look at a lavalier (lapel or tie-clip) microphone that produces excellent audio, but only costs $30.

Here's the transcript of the video:

The next thing you are going to need is a microphone and you see on mine I got a little lavalier microphone here that sits on my neck. Your camcorder will have a built-in mic but it's going to pick up lots of ambient noise. It's going to pick up things that you don't want to hear and it's not going to pick you up as well as you want. So it's best to get a microphone that plugs right into the mic-in port on your camcorder.

Now when it comes to microphones, you can spend as much money as you might imagine and some of them are going well for over a $1000. Surprisingly, what we found is the $27 microphone, the lavalier mic. This is the one we get at Radio Shack and this is the box it comes in. The little $27 lavalier microphone with an extension cable hooked to our camera gives us great results. Now when you buy your microphone, be careful because some of these will be stereo mics which is great if you’re doing an interview with two people, but you got to make sure that your camcorder mic inputs are also stereo. If it's not then you can buy an adapter to connect those two together.
