Web video for beginners

Need help with slow loading videos

Hi Peter

Saw your site on SBI forums (still struggling on first five days!)

My wife has a website with a video on it (linked to You Tube), but in South Africa where we live we are all plagued with limited bandwidth so even the most basic videos are a torturous start stop process, including the one on your home page. Is there a solution that will enable south africans to see our website videos faster? This is a problem in most developing countries.

The only thing you can do is make your video file sizes as small as possible Graham, as watching video online is just like downloading a file. The smaller it is, the faster it will load and play.

Using YouTube limits you to what they compress their videos at, but if you did it yourself, you could make the video files smaller. You just got to make sure you also maintain video quality.

Uploading shorter videos to YouTube will help, as will compressing the videos in a video editing program before uploading them.

Unfortunately, things are only going to get worse as High Definition video becomes the standard over the next year or two, and HD video is 6X bigger than the current standard definition video used on the Internet.

Best of luck.
