Using .avi in sony vegas movie studio

by Lee
(Manchester, UK)

I have bought the animated backgrounds dvd and am trying to get an .avi video file from the disc and into Sony Vegas.

When I double click on the file it copies it into Sony Vegas. However it does not seem to be open. It shows the 4 overlaping images of a sunflower.

The problem I have is that when I try to drag the .avi file down into the time line nothing happens.

I'm new to all this video editing and obviously am missing something. Hope you can point me in the right direction.

How to Successful Import, Open, and Play AVI in Sony Vegas at http://www.bigasoft.com/articles/easy-solve-sony-vegas-avi-no-video-problem.html

It solves:

Sony Vegas works well with some of my AVI files, but can't import other AVI files especially from Fraps, YouTube. Sony Vegas does import AVI video successfully, but cannot play it. AVI in Sony Vegas only get the audio portion without picture. Imported AVI in Sony Vegas will only do sounds but no video at all Vegas version 8.0 or later can accept AVI files, but prior versions of the software failed to open AVI files.

Hi Lee,

Does the preview image of the avi video clip appear in the Project Media section?

When you click and drag the video clip into the editing timeline, does anything appear there?

What is the file name of the video clip you are using from the DVD so I can check it out?

Try copying the video clip from the DVD to your computer first, and then adding it to Sony Vegas. See if that helps?

If you still have problems, can you take a screenshot of what you see in Sony Vegas, click on 'Ask a question' again and upload it so I can see what is going on?
